Combat sambo against three BJJ belts: distance and fresh opponents
July 29, 2026Kostya Zhyvanov faces three advanced BJJ opponents in consecutive rounds: purple belt Anton Bereda, brown belt Stanislav Kiriupin and black belt Oleksandr Oliinyk. The episode uses agreed mixed rules that give Kostya access to strikes, throws and submissions. That makes the approach to contact a central part of the challenge, before any ground exchange begins.
The sequence changes more than the belt
Kostya is introduced at 74 kg. The opponents are listed at 72 kg, 85 kg and 75 kg respectively, and each enters fresh. Kostya receives five minutes of rest between fights. The brown-belt round therefore changes the weight matchup as well as the opponent’s experience.
These details matter when interpreting a gauntlet. A later athlete does not enter the same situation as the first, because Kostya has already completed earlier rounds. The film combines differences in sporting background, individual style, body size and accumulated work.
The entry is part of the grappling problem
Allowing strikes changes what must happen before a grappler can establish the preferred grip or position. The BJJ athletes need to negotiate that distance and bring the exchange into their control and submission game. Kostya must also manage what happens when an opponent closes the space.
For a useful viewing pass, follow the transition from striking range to contact. Ask when the distance changes and whether the next action preserves control. This keeps the analysis attached to an observable exchange, rather than treating a style label as an explanation for everything on screen.
Read the agreed format before the result
This is a cross-style challenge with an agreed allocation of techniques. It should not be mistaken for an ordinary BJJ match or assumed to follow every rule of a formal combat sambo tournament. The conditions shown in the episode govern the comparison.
Watch the three rounds as separate problems linked by one athlete’s workload. The film’s useful question is how contact, control and recovery interact across that sequence. It does not provide a universal answer about what every combat sambist would do against every BJJ belt.
