Protect technical practice: add the smallest physical dose that reliably improves performance.
Strength and conditioning for judo and Sambo should preserve the quality of throwing practice, ukemi, grip fighting and randori. These sports already create substantial pulling, isometric, rotational, impact and high-intensity demands. Map the weekly technical and live sessions before adding gym work. A practical strength plan develops lower-body force through squat, split-stance and hinge patterns; upper-body pulling and pressing; trunk control; and limited grip or neck accessories chosen for the athlete. Fresh jumps, medicine-ball throws or appropriately coached fast lifts can develop general power, while actual entries and throws teach timing and direction. Conditioning should complement randori instead of duplicating every hard exchange off the mat. Two compact full-body sessions are one possible structure, not a rule. Use stable exercises, conservative progression and enough reserve that the athlete can maintain falling skill and safe partner control. As competition approaches, reduce unnecessary volume and soreness while retaining familiar strength and speed exposures. This framework is general education and does not prescribe weight cutting, nutrition or supplements. Throws require suitable mats, competent ukemi, progressive resistance and qualified supervision. Pain, head impact, dizziness, neurological symptoms or other concerns require stopping and appropriate assessment.

What to understand
Protect throwing and ukemi quality
Identify the sessions where athletes learn entries, complete throws or receive repeated landings. Do not place unfamiliar high-volume leg, trunk or grip work where it degrades posture, timing or falling skill. Technical safety is a performance priority, not an obstacle to conditioning.
Develop leg and hip force broadly
Squat, split-stance and hinge patterns can build general force from positions relevant to changing level, projecting and recovering balance. Select exercises that fit mobility, history and coaching. Avoid pretending one lift reproduces the technical geometry of every throw.
Balance pulling with total upper-body capacity
Jacket grip fighting creates major pulling and forearm demand, but more pulling is not the only answer. Program useful rows or pulls alongside pressing, shoulder control and release work. Monitor hands, elbows and shoulders across both mat and gym exposure.
Train power without sacrificing landing control
Jumps, throws and fast lifts should use small sets, full intent and clear stop rules. Count the explosive entries and impacts already present in technical practice. More plyometric volume is not automatically better when takeoff or landing mechanics deteriorate.
Condition around randori demands
Classify randori by duration, grip density, throwing intensity and recovery cost. If it already supplies repeated hard work, use off-mat sessions for a distinct need such as lower-intensity volume or measurable output. Preserve enough recovery for tactical and technical learning.

How to train it
Step 1 · map throws, landings and randori
For a representative week, record technical entries, completed throws, high-volume ukemi, grip rounds and hard randori. Mark the next day’s readiness and any repeated soreness. Use the map to avoid stacking similar impact and pulling stress.
Step 2 · build two compact full-body templates
An example Session A may use a squat, row, press, carry and brief trunk task. Session B may use a hinge, split-stance exercise, pull or press, and selective grip or neck work. Keep the menu stable and adjust it to the athlete; it is an example, not a prescription.
Step 3 · add a fresh power pairing
After warm-up and before heavy work, pair one lower-body projection with one medicine-ball throw or other appropriate upper-body action. Use a few crisp repetitions and full recovery. Stop when speed, distance or landing alignment declines.
Step 4 · choose one complementary conditioning mode
Use cycling, running, rowing or another accessible mode according to impact tolerance and the defined gap. Set work, rest, output and stop criteria. Do not reproduce uncontrolled throws under fatigue as a conditioning shortcut; technical throwing remains coached sport practice.
Step 5 · make competition-phase reductions
Retain familiar strength and power patterns while reducing accessory sets, high-soreness work and conditioning that competes with event-specific randori. Coordinate changes across sport and S&C coaches. Do not add maximal tests or novel lifts during final preparation.
Technical throws and safe falls keep first priority.
Build general force; practice exact direction on the mat.

Common mistakes
Lifting heavily before high-volume throwing
Fatigued legs, trunk and grip can reduce entry timing, partner control and ukemi. Place or dose strength work so the athlete can perform the next priority throwing session safely and skillfully.
Using only jacket-grip exercises
Fabric holds are specific to one grip function but can duplicate mat stress. Build broader support, wrist and upper-body capacity, and practise exact grip decisions during technical work.
Chasing fatigue with repeated throws
Throws combine skill, partner responsibility and impact. When coordination declines, they are a poor generic conditioning tool. Use controllable off-mat modes for conditioning and keep throwing quality under sport coaching.
Treating weight cutting as conditioning
Rapid body-mass manipulation is not a fitness method and can affect health and performance. This guide does not prescribe it. Athletes considering weight-class changes need appropriate sport, medical and nutrition support under applicable rules.

01 · How many strength sessions do judoka or Sambo athletes need?
There is no universal number. Two compact full-body sessions are a practical example for many schedules, while competition density, training age and randori load may require less or allow more. Choose the smallest dose that produces progress without reducing technical quality.
02 · Are Olympic lifts essential for judo or Sambo?
No. They can develop useful qualities for athletes with skilled coaching and sufficient practice time, but jumps, medicine-ball throws and simpler fast lifts can serve related goals. Choose the method that offers quality output without excessive learning or fatigue cost.
03 · Should grip training use a gi or kurtka?
Fabric work can be useful when it matches the sport and a specific grip function, but it should not replace general pulling, hand and wrist capacity or technical grip fighting. Account for the large fabric volume already performed in practice and monitor hand and elbow tolerance.
04 · What should happen after a hard head impact during a throw?
Stop participation immediately and notify the coach. Do not return because the athlete feels pressure to finish practice. Headache, dizziness, confusion, balance change, nausea or other concerning symptoms require appropriate medical assessment and the applicable return-to-sport process.
